Horse Thieves - John Murrell's gang

It happened in 1865. Two men of the John Murrell's gang stole Mrs. Colson's pair of beautiful roan carriage horses in Hayneville. They were chased through Perry thirteen miles before both horses and one man were caught at Bay Creek between Perry and Fort Valley. The man was hung just above the ford. The other man escaped and was never heard of again. The John Murrell organization was the best organized band of thieves in the United States. it was a regular chain from Florida to Kansas.
